Guest Expert: HRV Training with Dr. Tim Herzog

Your nervous system is like your bike's suspension. When it's working well, you absorb stress, adapt to challenges, and recover smoothly. When it's rigid, every bump rattles through your system.

Heart Rate Variability (HRV) measures how adaptable your nervous system is. Higher HRV means your body can shift gears smoothly between effort and recovery. Lower HRV means you're stuck in one mode—grinding gears when you need to adapt. This month, we're addressing that.

To help us navigate this territory, we're bringing in Dr. Tim Herzog, Board Certified in Biofeedback and an expert in Heart Rate Variability (HRV) training for athletes and high-performers. (Fun fact: this is Erin's mentor, who is helping her get her Biofeedback Board Certification!)

Session Format

This will be an open Q&A session where Dr. Herzog will answer your questions about HRV training, biofeedback, nervous system regulation, and building resilience as an athlete.

Tim specializes in teaching athletes to train their nervous system with the same intention they train their body. He'll help you understand:

  • What HRV actually measures—and how to use it for performance and recovery

  • The difference between HRV tracking and HRV biofeedback training—passive monitoring vs. active nervous system training

  • How to find your "resonance frequency"—your personal optimal breathing rate that maximizes HRV

  • How to use HRV data to inform training decisions—data-driven recovery instead of willpower

  • Practical biofeedback strategies for pre-race anxiety, wired-and-tired states, and faster recovery

Submit Your Questions in Advance

To make the most of our time with Dr. Herzog, submit your questions ahead of time by commenting below or submitting them via the form below. This helps us prioritize topics that matter most to you.

Questions can be about:

  • How to start tracking HRV (apps, devices, protocols)

  • Using HRV to guide training load decisions

  • Biofeedback techniques for specific situations (pre-race nerves, recovery, sleep)

  • Whether HRV training is right for your specific circumstances (breathing challenges, chronic conditions, etc.)

If you have a Polar heart rate strap, bring it—we may be able to guide you through using Tim's biofeedback app during the session if time allows.
