Their body is in a critical stage of growth and development while also training at high intensity, creating unique energy demands that go far beyond what most people realize. Here's the frustrating part: most sports nutrition research has been conducted almost exclusively on male participants. A 2022 audit of nearly 2,000 sports science studies found that women accounted for only 23% of total participants, and of the studies that did include women, 86% made no attempt to account for menstrual cycle or hormonal contraceptive use [4]. Research shows that adolescent athletes who sleep less than 8 hours have significantly higher injury rates [3]. When combined with inadequate fueling, the risk increases further [2]. For all athletes, stress fractures, frequent illness, and performance decline aren't just bad luck, they're often red flags that the body is running on empty.

The Diet Culture Problem

These messages often contradict each other and contradict what the body actually needs.

If your teen seems confused, anxious, or guilty about eating, it's not their fault. They're navigating a lot of noise, and much of it isn't grounded in science or in what actually supports long-term performance and health.

Here's what research actually shows: the leanest athletes aren't necessarily the fastest or most successful. Athletes who eat enough to support their training consistently outperform those who under-fuel. What determines success isn't body composition, it's energy availability, mental resilience, and ability to recover.

What Proper Fueling Actually Looks Like

Your teen athlete likely needs 2,500-4,000+ calories per day, depending on their training volume, body size, and sport [5]. That's not a typo, and some athletes training at very high volumes need even more. While every athlete's fueling needs are unique, the ranges below are starting points based on research, and individual needs depend on training volume, body size, growth rate, sport demands, and metabolism.

Here's what those calories should include:

  • Carbohydrates (6-10 grams per kg body weight) as the primary fuel source [5]. This is what powers training and helps with recovery. Think: oatmeal, rice, pasta, bread, fruits, and starchy vegetables.

  • Protein (1.4-2.0 grams per kg) for muscle repair and growth [5]. Spread this throughout the day: breakfast, lunch, dinner, and snacks. Sources include eggs, Greek yogurt, chicken, fish, beans, and protein powder.

  • Healthy fats (20-35% of total calories) for hormone production, brain function, and nutrient absorption [5]. Think: avocados, nuts, nut butters, olive oil, and fatty fish.

  • Key nutrients like calcium (1,300mg/day), iron (15mg/day), and vitamin D for bone health, energy production, and immune function [6].

In practice, this means your teen eating breakfast every day, even before early practices, plus regular meals and 2-3 snacks, with fueling strategically around training.

What Parents Can Do

Build their support team.
